Summit council approves Bridgestone billing deal
Summit County Council on Monday approved a one-year, $105,408 contract with Bridgestone Americas to print and mail its utility bills to about 17,000 customers. The deal will save the county $14,000 to $17,000 because of lower paper and mail costs, county officials have said.Bridgestone Americas operates a print shop in Akron and has a similar contract with the city of Stow.No county employees will lose their jobs. Utility workers now are pulled from customer service to handle the billing work so customer service should improve, officials said.In other business, council:• Approved a $229,600 contract with Kraiger Construction Co. of Zoar to renovate the visitation center on the Summit County Children Services campus in Akron.• Provided grants to the following agencies: Summit County Port Authority, $75,000; Ohio & Erie Canalway Coalition, $75,000; Ohio State University Extension Services, $117,800; Summit Soil and Water Conservation District, $171,900; and Summit County Historical Society, $51,000.• Approved a six-month, $196,854 contract with the Akron Metropolitan Housing Authority to provide four sheriff’s deputies and three vehicles for the agency.• Signed off on a one-year, $472,900 contract with the Legal Defenders Office of Summit County to provide legal services for indigents.
